Leucistic Squirrel
Leucism is special.
The Merriam-Webster dictionary gives this definition “an abnormal condition of reduced pigmentation affecting various animals (such as birds, mammals, and reptiles) that is marked by overall pale color or patches of reduced coloring and is caused by a genetic mutation which inhibits melanin and other pigments from being deposited in feathers, hair, or skin".”
Is it rare? uncommon? I don’t know, but I was incredibly pleased to see this beauty on a walk in the woods just outside of the Banff townsite. I went back three times over a 2 week period, in various lighting conditions, to capture these images.
